Steve Berlack, Chairman
Co-founder & educator Steve Berlack is Ronnie's father and current chairman of BRASS. He has coached alpine skiing at Burke Mountain Academy for 18 years. During that time he has traveled extensively with his ski groups through North and South America, and Europe. During these training and racing trips he has been responsible for organizing the travel, training and racing schedule, and safety for the alpine ski groups. Steve has a BA in economics from the University of New Hampshire, and enjoyed a previous professional life as a high tech entrepreneur. He and his wife Cindy, also a BRASS board member, reside in Franconia. N.H. and East Burke, Vt. When not coaching alpine skiing, Steve has enjoyed extensive offshore sailboat racing.
Laura Astle, Secretary
Co-founder Laura is Bryce's mom and the current secretary of BRASS. She grew up in Southern California and accepted a swimming scholarship at University Nevada Reno, where she also learned to love skiing at Mount Rose. While working for Pan American World Airways, she traveled extensively. She moved to Utah in 1997 with her husband Jamie and their boys Jason, Bryce and Chris for a change of pace from the California lifestyle. Upon moving to Utah, she's continued to work as a real estate agent and enjoys it to this day. She dearly misses her son Bryce and is working with BRASS to make changes in avalanche and snow safety awareness.
Mark Brown, Treasurer
Treasurer BRASS Treasurer Mark Brown has spent his career in financial management and serves as BRASS treasurer. After a long career with Barclays in London, his family came to Park City in 2016 where he now works with Northwestern Mutual. Like many, he became passionate about BRASS’ cause and serves an important board role in advising the organizational on financial matters. He is also active in the Park City Rotary Club.
Co-founder Jamie Astle is Bryce’s dad and number one fan, and a past chairman of BRASS. His life for the last 25 years has revolved around his family — they are an integral part of each other’s lives. "Like many others, my life revolves around my kids, to me nothing else really matters." In 1997, he and his wife Laura moved with their family to Utah to raise their children in an outdoor atmosphere that provided access to endless fun and adventure. His involvement with BRASS is to ensure that proper safety education, policies and procedures are established and implemented by U.S. Ski & Snowboard.
Co-founder Cindy Berlack, mother of Ronnie, was raised in Wellesley, Mass. and went to Middlebury College where she balanced academics with alpine and nordic ski racing. After a year of fieldwork in Norway, living with the nomadic Sami reindeer herders, she graduated with a BA in anthropology and a teaching certification. She then went to California where she studied acting and screen writing. She and Steve married in 1990, after which she spent over 20 years raising children Ronnie and Carolyn, worked in schools and coached alpine skiing. Now she is entrenched in avalanche education due to the loss of Ronnie to an avalanche in 2015, the inspiration for BRASS. She was honored by U.S. Ski & Snowboard in 2020 with its Russell Wilder Award for service to youth, recognizing her work in pioneer the BRASS 101 avalanche safety education program.
U.S. Ski Team member Steven Nyman is a BRASS board member and one of the most accomplished men’s downhill ski racers in America. A World Junior Championships gold medalist in slalom, Nyman gravitated to speed and quickly established himself on the World Cup tour winning the fabled Saslong Classic in Val Gardena, Italy three times. A recent addition to the BRASS board, Nyman is a strong and respected voice amongst athletes. He grew up at Utah’s Sundance ski area and is an accomplished big mountain skier. He serves as a strong advocate for avalanche safety and education.
